From the Sweet Science to Computer Science: My Journey

My name is Terence Oddie, and I created this site as an inside look into my thoughts on technology and culture. Growing up in the city, my mom always told me that science and technology were my way out. I wasn’t the best student—honestly, her words were the main reason I kept showing up to school. Being a nerd made me an easy target, and for a long time I was bullied and pushed around, until one day I decided I had enough.

That’s when I found boxing. The ring became a place of comfort and clarity. Boxing taught me that I could take hits—physically and mentally—and keep going. I fell in love with the discipline, the grind, and the confidence it gave me. Life has been full of ups and downs, but boxing showed me that I can handle loss, pressure, and pain without breaking.

That confidence carried into my love for science, especially chemistry. Understanding matter at its most fundamental level made me believe I could become a chemical engineer. In college, I spent most of my time in front of a computer, not fully understanding how it worked at first, but learning more every day.

In 2019, I completed a computer programming course at the University of Oregon. Learning to code in a bootcamp environment in just six months was challenging and incredibly fascinating. Watching an idea turn into a working application—and understanding how much effort goes into building something simple—completely changed how I see technology.

I began my career working as an application developer, where I learned how systems are built, how data flows, and how small design decisions can have massive consequences. Over time, that experience led me to pivot into cybersecurity. Building applications gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of modern systems and exposed me to the critical thinking required to protect them. Security engineering isn’t just about tools—it’s about mindset, problem-solving, and understanding how things break as much as how they’re built.

Today, I’m building a cybersecurity consulting firm alongside a STEM program designed to give back to my community. My goal is to help organizations secure their systems while creating opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world problem solving.

Most of all, I want to show how powerful and accessible technology really is—how little you need to get started, and how it can be used anywhere in the world to change lives and reshape tech culture.
